Flying for most people is stressful, seated in squeezed space for an extended time, especially on a long-haul flight. Many want some familiar comforts and that brings us to the question can you use Bluetooth on a plane?
When you are on an airplane, you have to put your cell phone and tablet in “airplane mode.” This usually turns off all cellular, wifi, and Bluetooth connections.
Bluetooth headphones will allow for easier connection to Bluetooth devices.
Does that mean you can not use your blue tooth during the duration of your flight or is there a way you can use wireless headphones on a plane?
Yes, you can if you know what you’re doing! But then again there are things like power to your Bluetooth. Keep reading to find out exactly how to do it.
Wireless headphones and wireless earbuds are a great way to listen to music, movies, and other media without “disturbing” those next to you. At best, try to use noise-canceling headphones.
- Best over-ear noise-canceling Bluetooth headphones for when you fly.
- Best wireless, Bluetooth, noise-canceling earbuds. These might be on the expensive side but they come with so much function and are worth every penny.
Is Bluetooth Allowed On Flights?
Bluetooth headphones are a great choice for air travel. They offer an easy way to drown out background noise and can make the flight go more quickly.
Of course, you won’t be able to rely on them for audio in the event of an unexpected change in pressure during a flight.
It’s also important to remember that when you’re asked by a flight attendant to put away electronic devices, you should follow the prompts of the crew and turn off your Bluetooth headphones.
That said, when used properly, Bluetooth headphones can make for a comfortable and enjoyable flight, especially on a long flight.
So if you’re looking for headphones that will let you enjoy music without disturbing those around you or limiting you with wires hanging around, then Bluetooth may be the way to go!

Which airlines allow Bluetooth headphones?
Different airlines have different rules so it makes sense to inform yourself to know which airlines will allow you to use Bluetooth headphones and other wireless devices inside their airplanes and other specific rules they might have.
Since 2013, Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) approved the use of Bluetooth by airline Passengers.
But as already mentioned above, FAA and Airline regulations are two different things not forgetting that Bluetooth connectivity might not be available in all airlines.
Below I will list some Airlines where you can use your Bluetooth and support Bluetooth technology.
Remember this can change at any time, more airlines might join the list so do check with the airline you are flying.
JetBlue:
You are allowed to use your Bluetooth, except for takeoff and landing. But their entertainment system is not Bluetooth capable but you can use it with your own device.
Lufthansa:
The airline allows Bluetooth headphones use during every part of the flight. It`s worth mentioning that not all Lufthansa airline airplanes have compatible inflight entertainment systems with Bluetooth.
American Airlines:
The airline allows passengers to use Bluetooth headphones. Be aware that you can only use the device when airborne.
Another thing worth mentioning is that American Airlines don`t have an entertainment system but you can use their App.
Their App allows you to access their TV shows, movies, and music but you have to download the app before you fly.
Southwest Airlines:
The airline allows the use of Bluetooth headsets and you can use the internet for as low as $10 to use the internet including wi-fi services. You can only use Bluetooth during take-off and landing.
Alaska Airlines:
Although Alaska Airlines let you use Bluetooth, their inflight entertainment does not support the use of headsets.
Ryanair:
A cheap airline where you can book a flight ticket for as cheap as $20.The airline allows Bluetooth headphones, the only disadvantage is that they do not have an inflight entertainment system, but for such low-price flight tickets, you can`t expect much.
Emirates:
Apart from switching your Bluetooth off during take-off and landing, you can use your Bluetooth on Emirates flights. Watch movies, listen to music, or whatever you choose.
British Airways:
The UK-based airline carrier allows the use of Bluetooth headphones, you only have to switch them off during take-off and landing.
Delta Airlines:
Once airborne, you can use your Bluetooth headphone on Delta Airlines.
Just a heads up, Delta Airlines have not yet finished updating their inflight entertainment system so in some of their flights, your Bluetooth or wireless headsets might not be compatible.
Qatar Airways:
Qatar Airways offers passengers 100% touch-free technology for inflight entertainment across all their A350 airplanes.
so if you choose to, you can use their in-flight entertainment system through your own personal electronic devices.
KLM:
The Royal Dutch Airline allows you to use Bluetooth during flight (apart from take-off and landing).
But you should know that their built-in entertainment is not compatible with blue tooth headphones.
Turkish Airlines
Again the use of Bluetooth is permitted apart from when taking off and landing. It`s also worth mentioning that their inflight entertainment is not compatible with Bluetooth headphones.
If you need to use their entertainment app, they have an entertainment app for Android and Apple devices.
Unfortunately, Air France does not allow Bluetooth on their flights, but they will provide you with a headphone during your flight.
So note that even if you had Bluetooth with you, it will not be compatible with the Airfrance entertainment system.
easyJet:
Another budget airline where flying to Spain sometimes cost me less than buying a 2-hour train ticket.
Easy jet has no inflight entertainment but then they do not fly long-haul flights they also do not have an entertainment App.
Can You Use Wired Headphones On A Plane?

Are There Any Regulations or Restrictions for Using Wireless Headphones on a Plane?
Generally speaking, it appears that wireless headphones may be used on planes in moderation. But put clearly, different rules apply to different airlines.
Some airlines prohibit their use completely due to concerns about potential interference with onboard communications systems and other devices.
So it’s important to check the specific regulations of any given airline before deciding to fly with a pair.
When possible, passengers should look into distracting activities that don’t rely on the technology of airplane mode and avoid using wireless headphones or other electronics while in the air.
Doing so will help to ensure a more peaceful and pleasant flight experience for everyone on board the plane. Whether wireless headphones will become mainstream for in-flight listening is yet to be seen.
The good news is that with technology rapidly advancing, however, there is no doubt that frequent flyers will have more options when it comes to enjoying their favorite tunes during air travel in the near future and the use of electronic devices.
Why you can’t always use Bluetooth headphones on some planes
With the increasing popularity of wireless headphones, it’s important to be aware that you may not be able to use them on some flights, especially if they run on Bluetooth or other kinds of radio frequencies.
This isn’t a sign that individual airline is completely out of touch with modern technology, but more for safety reasons.
Those frequencies can interfere with navigation technologies onboard the plane. The best way to plan ahead is to do some research and make sure the headphones you have aren’t going to disrupt your trip.
That way, you can get in, sit back, and enjoy your flight without any complications. After all, no one wants their travel experience hindered by a pair of headphones!
When is using Bluetooth on a Plane Questionable?
I think the three most common are
- Take-Off and Landing
- Airline Regulations
Why Is Using Wireless Headphones On A Plane An Open Discussion?
Using wireless headphones on a plane has become an open discussion due to the convenience of technology and travelers’ rising expectations.
Whether airlines adopt this feature or not remains to be seen, but many travelers would certainly welcome the added convenience that wireless headphones can provide.
Despite potential drawbacks with in-flight technology, such as decreased safety or increased ambient noise, the use of Bluetooth headphones may also enable communication for healing while away from home.
Therefore, it’s important to continue considering the pros and cons of such portable electronic devices in aviation travel so that individual passengers can make an informed decision when selecting their audio devices for flying.
Ultimately, how each person chooses to use their wireless headphones and other communication systems during flight is entirely up to them if they are enabled onboard – something that only time will tell!
Headphones vs Earbuds, what’s best for air travel?
We’ve explored the benefits and drawbacks of headphones versus earbuds for air travel, but ultimately it comes down to personal preference.
Some people may prefer the more powerful sounds from headphones or the convenience and portability of wireless connections earbuds.
Whichever option you choose, be sure to check ahead of time whether your earbud or Bluetooth wireless headphones have a noise cancellation system.
Otherwise, it could mean that both types of devices might be too intrusive and need to be adjusted accordingly.
As well, make sure to note any cabin announcements during phases of the flight, this is important if you want to stay safe during your flight.
Ultimately, plan ahead and take precautions so that you can enjoy your trip in the best way possible.
With the right amount of preparation and research, headphones or earbuds can provide travelers with entertainment, comfort, or relaxation on long flights.
Will Bluetooth headphones work with smartphones during airplane mode?
Ultimately, the decision of whether to utilize Bluetooth headphones while using airplane mode on your smartphone is up to you.
Based on research and user feedback, most people have had positive experiences and have concluded that the process is a simple one. It will all depend on a specific airline if they allow such gadgets or not.
Keep in mind that it comes with certain risks, such as decreased battery life and slower connection speeds.
Although it may not be advised by all manufacturers, the possible benefits of using this technology certainly outweigh any potential danger or pitfall.
If you’re looking for an enriched audio experience with sound quality while using your device during flight mode, Bluetooth headphones just may be your go-to choice.
However, always consult with airline personnel especially on international flights if in doubt about any specific regulations regarding the use of such technology.
There could still be potential legal ramifications depending on where you are traveling.
Can I listen to AirPods and other wireless earbuds on planes?
All in all, wireless earbuds are becoming increasingly popular due to their convenience and comfort.
AirPods are some of the best wireless earbuds on the market, but they may not be ideal for air traveling.
They are so tiny you`ll not find them when they fall on your seat, so you should opt for wireless headsets like this one. Bose QuietComfort might be on the higher side but worth every penny.
Fortunately, there are many alternative options that allow you to listen to your favored tunes and podcasts while traveling by air you are not limited to a specific brand.
As regulations and guidelines change over time depending on a specific airline, it is recommended that passengers always check with their chosen airline regarding acceptable technology before boarding a flight.
Understanding the rules set in place for technology usage during flights can help make your traveling experience as enjoyable as possible!
Additionally, don’t forget to bring a trusty pair of noise-canceling headphones with wifi connectivity just in case – you can never be too prepared!
Can my wireless headset connect to IFE?
A wireless headset can be connected to an inflight entertainment system, depending on the capability of your earset, the type of connection, and the sound quality.
However, it’s important to read the instructions to ensure what type of connection the airline has and if it`s compatible with your device before attempting to make the connection.
If you don’t have a personal device and a compatible headset and you’re unsure of which one to buy, most airlines will offer rental headsets from their in-flight entertainment stores.
Before using such a product, it’s also important to verify with your airline whether or not they actually support wireless headsets.
All in all, connecting your wireless headset with an inflight entertainment system can certainly add more convenience and entertainment when traveling! Now, who wouldn’t want that?
How To Charge Your Bluetooth On A Plane
Ultimately, the question of how to ensure your Bluetooth stays powered when flying can be easily solved by bringing an extra power bank with you. I love Anker Portable Charger as you can use it on different gadgets.
Many brands are available that can charge various types of Bluetooth devices and there are now lightweight and durable options that won’t take up a lot of space in your carry-on luggage.
Beyond solely relying on a power bank, you should also check the battery life of your device beforehand to make sure it can last throughout the flight.
With this tip in tow, it is possible to stay connected during long flights without interruption and have a truly enjoyable trip.
So if you’re taking to the skies soon, remember - don’t forget your extra power bank. Take extra power and get ready for some smooth sailing ahead.
Just a heads up:
You can only take a power bank in your hand luggage, but it must be a capacity of 12 volts or less than 100Wh.
As with most things with Airlines, each airline more or less makes its own rules, with BA, Batteries must meet (IATA)International Air Transport Association Special Provision A67 but you can take 2 extra/spare batteries.

Do I Have To Show My Bluetooth Headphones To Airport Security?
The answer to the question of whether or not you need to take out Bluetooth headphones is, unfortunately, yes.
It is important to keep in mind that while traveling through an airport, security checks are always a priority and therefore, FAA regulations demand that Bluetooth headphones must be taken out from any carry-on luggage and placed into a separate bin.
Furthermore, you should make sure to follow all other TSA rules and regulations during their check-in.
Therefore, when traveling with electronic devices and Bluetooth headphones specifically, it is advisable for passengers to double-check their items as well as airline policies ahead of time in order to avoid any situations at the airport.
Additionally, travelers should also be aware of the potential technological security threats that can occur if they’re not careful.
Keeping Bluetooth devices off whenever possible while in doubt is a sound practice that would help ensure safety at airports around the world.
Hi there,
That’s a fantastic article. Thank you for sharing it!
I am planning a trip with my family to Europe very soon, and I was a little worried because my son can’t travel anywhere without his earphone. He is addicted to music:) However, using earphones with a wire will give him peace of mind as he won’t have to worry about the battery. Just a question. To whom do we need to get information about the wire connector? To the store where we buy the headphone or through the flight company? I do have another question that is not related to the post if you don’t mind. I wanted to know more about your website. I know it’s about travel the world, but just want to have a little information about the company:) I am curious by nature.
Thanks a lot!
Hi Daniella
Thanks regarding using Bluetooth on a plane, as said in my post every airline do have their little allowed or not allowed, remember we are talking about individual lines here(since I don`t know which airline you plan on using) the rules may differ even on little things like what you can take in your hand luggage. So it helps to always inquire with the airline if you are not sure.
The website is newly created by me, and mostly it will be about travel in Switzerland but before I get there, I wanted to cover air travel on what you can take and what you can`t take because this is always an issue to a lot of people.
I hope this has answered your question.
Apart from domestically, I don’t fly that much, but I didn’t know that one was allowed ever to use blue tooth on a flight. Most of the ones I have been on have told us to put our devices on airplane mode, which as far as I know means no blue tooth.
I didn’t realize that the rules were relaxed once in the air, or maybe that only counts for long or international flights. Thanks for the list of airlines that do allow the use of blue tooth and what they offer in the way of entertainment, as I am planing a trip to the US at the end of 2024, and as it is a long flight, these are great things to keep in mind.
I fly long haul minimum 2X a year (more than 8 hours one way) I`ll go insane if I could not use my Bluetooth. Yes Airlines do have different regulations at it always helps to check with the airline you are using. Having said that, budget Airlines(in my opinion) are mostly strict in what you can or can`t do.
