As a black single female traveler, I have navigated many challenges when it comes to traveling around the world.
For starters, while some people think that as a solo female traveler, I would be scared and vulnerable, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
After immersing myself in various cultures across different continents over the past decade, my perspective on life and travel has forever been changed for good.
I will share with you my personal experiences of being a black woman who loves adventuring off the beaten path! A black woman who thinks I don`t have to wait for friends to travel with me.
I’m embracing every challenge with enthusiasm and an open mind. Whether you’re an experienced traveler looking for tips or someone wanting insight into what it’s like to explore solo as a woman of color, I hope this piece will offer something of value to your journey!
Why Do I Travel Solo?
From the streets of Paris, Milano, or Newyork to the villages of the Dominican Republic or Kenya I have found a passion for solo travel that has rapidly taken me places.
Though my friends just can’t seem to understand why, it is something about being independent and alone that truly sets my soul free.
With each new place I explore, from small mountain villages scattered along winding paths in Switzerland or immense villages in Morocco or Egypt, I find myself more alive than ever before.
Friends often ask why I choose to experience this world as an individual rather than with companions—it’s simple really;
By opting out of tour groups and romanticized getaways, I am able to discover places at my own pace without having anyone decide how fast (or slow) we will go.
There are so many stories to tell when traveling solo – it’s almost like experiencing a foreign country twice! From connecting with locals on their terms outside tourist attractions to uncovering one-of-a-kind experiences hiding beneath swirling fogged pavement or shaded sunsets.
These moments are firmly rooted within me forever. To others traveling alone may be intimidating but for me it’s a liberating feeling showcasing independence while discovering parts unknown.
So here’s why I’m drawn towards unaccompanied journeys as opposed to group trips abroad:
